Easiest Way to Make Appetizing Basbusa

Basbusa. This was the third recipe I tried of basbousa and thankfully it turned out just the way I wanted. The coconut flavor stood out like someone else has mentioned too which was a big plus point and it wasn;t too cakey- just the right amount of baking powder. Basbousa (also namoura, revani, hareseh and other names) is a traditional Middle Eastern sweet cake, though also popular in other countries.

Basbusa Basbousa are small cakes that are covered with syrup. The are perfect with coffee or tea. This basbousa recipe is very easy. You can cook Basbusa using 13 ingredients and 15 steps. Here is how you achieve that.

Ingredients of Basbusa

  1. It's of Basbusa.
  2. It's 2 cups of Semolina.
  3. It's 1 cup of Shredded Coconut.
  4. It's 3/4 cup of White Sugar.
  5. It's 1 teaspoon of Baking Powder.
  6. Prepare 1 tablespoon of Vanilla.
  7. You need 100 g of Melted Butter.
  8. It's 250 ml of Heavy / Thick Cream.
  9. It's of Sugar Syrup.
  10. It's 1.5 cups of White Sugar.
  11. Prepare 1 cup of Water.
  12. It's 1 teaspoon of lemon juice.
  13. It's 1 tablespoon of rose water.

While the basbousa is baking, prepare the cinnamon simple syrup. In a small sauce pan or pot, combine the sugar, water and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil on high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Turn heat to low and let cook for a few minutes until the syrup thickens.

Basbusa step by step

  1. We start with the Sugar syrup first.
  2. Bring water and sugar to a boil. Stir gently..
  3. Once it reaches a boil, reduce heat and let it simmer. Do not stir. 3-5 mins.
  4. Remove from heat. Add lemon juice and rose water. And let the syrup cool..
  5. Start on the basbusa mix. Mix all the dry ingredients.
  6. Add the vanilla and butter and mix..
  7. Then add the cream. And mix. It will be a wet sand consistency..
  8. Move to a baking dish and pat flat with a wet hand..
  9. Score lines and add pealed almonds.
  10. Bake for 28 minutes in a preheated oven (middle rack) at 180C / 350F.
  11. Adjust time as needed. You are aiming for crisp edges..
  12. Switch to top grill / broiler (low) and bring to golden brown. Just takes a few mins. So watch carefully..
  13. Cut into the score lines. This will help with absorbing the sugar syrup..
  14. Pour sugar syrup over quickly; within minutes of removing from the oven..
  15. Let it cool. And enjoy!!.
